On June 17, a “Quantum in Space” event was held in Tallinn at Palo Alto Club, organized by AS Metrosert. The event brought together members of Estonia’s quantum community and experts to explore the applications of quantum technologies in the space sector and discuss Estonia’s potential in this rapidly evolving field.
The event also marked the final phase of a study commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA). The goal of the study was to map the capabilities of Estonian companies and research institutions in developing quantum technologies for space-related applications. The study was led by Metrosert in collaboration with key national organizations and companies.

The event opened with a summary of the study results presented by Mari Aru, Head of the Research and Development division at Metrosert. This was followed by presentations from:
- Kristjan Krips (Cybernetica), who introduced the topic of post-quantum cryptography and its practical applications.
- Ingrid Linnas (EstQCI coordinator, RIKS), who gave an overview of the EstQCI project aimed at developing Estonia’s quantum communication capabilities and establishing the foundational infrastructure for new cybersecurity solutions.
- Christopher Vasko (ESA), who provided insights into ESA’s programmes and quantum technology developments, with a focus on the Scylight – Optical and Quantum Communication programme.
- Simone Briatore (Founder of Golbriak Space), who presented the company’s projects aimed at enabling fast and secure data exchange between space, airborne, maritime, and ground assets.

Following the presentations, the event continued with lively discussions and active networking among company representatives, researchers, policymakers, and experts.
It is encouraging to see that Estonia’s quantum community is rapidly growing and interest in the field continues to rise. Events like this help lay a strong foundation for future collaboration, knowledge sharing, and international visibility.
